D9 Irish language

In light of the review of Kilkenny’s County Development Plan please find below for your consideration some observations with regard to the Irish language.

The Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht welcome the commitment shown by the Kilkenny Council with regard to the promotion of the Irish  language. This has been evident in the Council’s 3 year Irish language Plan which came into effect in August 2009 under section 11 of the Official Languages Act 2003. The final amendments are being made to the Council’s next Irish language Plan which will come into effect shortly.

The department in particular welcomes the commitment being made to give due consideration to the naming of new estates in Irish.  The Placenames Commission exists to support the process of developing new names for housing estates and the process should take cognisance of local culture, history and geography unique to each new development.

Le meas

Ritheadh rún a mholas chun coiste logainmneacha a bheith in áit chun go mbeadh ainmneacha nua eastáit rite tríd faoi mar a dhéantar i bPort Láirge. Ba chóir go mbeadh bunú an choiste sin mar phriaracht ag an gcomhairle agus nach mbeadh cead aon ainm sráide nó eastáit i gCill Chainnigh a bheith ceadaithe gan chead an choiste sin. ba chóir go mbeadh aon ainm áite nua bunaithe le dúchas an cheantair agus go mbeadh sé i nGaoluinn nó dá-theangach ar a laghad.

Go raibh maith agat as do nóta tráchta.
